In partnership with Empire Office, DCI provided approximately 120 sets of highly customized residence Hall furniture for Columbia University’s new 600 W. 125th Street residential building.

This 34-story apartment building for graduate students and faculty members is the largest residential building ever built by Columbia with 142 apartments totalling 182,000 square feet.

The graceful building was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with CetraRuddy Architecture as the Executive Architect and Interior Designer.

Among the sustainable design features, 600 W. 125th Street boasts energy-efficient systems, limited gas usage for long-term carbon emissions reductions, vegetated roofs, stormwater detention, views of nature from common spaces, and is on track for LEED® Gold certification.

Additional features include community terraces, lounges, exercise and yoga rooms, game room, children’s playroom, and bicycle storage.

Furniture

The University and designers were intimately involved with every small detail of the furniture design.

Of note, the two-drawer platform bed is crafted from rift sawn white oak. More durable than red oak because it is less porous, rift sawn white oak is the choice of cut for fine furniture makers.

This hardwood is generally esteemed for its stability, durability, and attractive grain. It’s comparable to maple in hardness, and it’s resistant to moisture, scratches, and dents.

Other furniture is made from white laminate and white powder-coated metal components.
